A Historic Then…
The Greenhill Shooting Lodge was established around 1764 by the 5th Duke of Roxburghe, to have a family shooting retreat a ‘stone’s throw’ from his in-town home, Floors Castle. These walls have sheltered generations, including the 8th Duke of Roxburghe, Henry Innes-kerr, and his wife Mary "May" Innes-Ker, a prominent American-born "Dollar Princess" who married into her Scottish nobility life in a rare high-society love match in 1903. The “stuff of fairy tales” they say, in the most lovely way it seems, the connection between Scotland & America run deep here in the Borders. Then on to hosting various Roxburghe family members for their personal shooting & fishing occasions and then ultimately, it became the tailored home to private families, which is currently exactly that of interior designer Eve Whitman, who is now opening her doors to guests under the Greenhill Lodge of Scotland title.
…And the Now
Being the true dreamer that she is - Eve knew she'd end up in Scotland one day. The “how & when” was the only mystery in this vision. This lifelong goal was realized in the Spring of 2025, following an email from Roxburghe Estate representatives. Without hesitation, Eve packed her bags and uprooted her life in the States to spend the next 10 months of her life fully immersed in a complete renovation of the Greenhill Lodge estate. Using her decades of experience in all things concept & design, she painstakingly crafted a vision for this version of Greenhill, focusing on honoring the legacy of this historic estate simultaneously making it current and welcoming to all. Eve listened. She engaged this Greenhill Lodge & land. She stepped inside and let it simply tell her all that the house could be - not only for herself and her family, but for all to enjoy.
With its inherent natural surrounding splendor and her discerning eye towards the hospitality world of intentional detailed care, Eve welcomes you & yours, to Greenhill Lodge in the Borders.
-Floors Castle-
Rising above the River Tweed in Kelso, Floors Castle is Scotland’s largest inhabited home and the spectacular seat of the 11th Duke of Roxburghe, Charles Innes-Ker. Originally built in 1721 and later transformed into a "fairy-tale" palace by William Adam and William Playfair, the castle remains a vibrant family residence for the Duke “Charlie”, Duchess Annie together with their lovely family. Visitors can explore opulent interiors shaped by the 8th Duchess, American heiress May Goelet in the 1800’s, whose world-class collection of tapestries and French furniture still fills the grand rooms. Beyond the house, the estate offers a quintessential Borders experience, featuring the stunning Victorian Walled Gardens, the historic "Queen's House" summerhouse, and scenic riverside trails that perfectly capture the landscape Sir Walter Scott once called "a kingdom fit for Oberon." https://www.floorscastle.com/tickets/
